WHAT KIND OF NOVELS WILL MFR CONTRACT?
As a platform, we want to host stories that have a solid plot and good character development. Everything else is secondary.
Regardless of the genre and plotline, MFR novels need to be edited to avoid repetition and useless info, and to have no issues with grammar, syntax, typos, punctuation, capitalization, switching tenses, etc. Grammarly is your friend.
When it comes to tropes, polyamory, harem, and reverse harem are controversial. Having them in your story will limit the number of readers that will pick up the novel.
Recipe for success (cliché but it works): ML and FL can have sexual history, but once they meet and the story focuses on them, additional partners are frowned upon.
Regardless of how many people are part of your romance story, remember that: consent is sexy; assault and coercion are cringe.
How much smut is too much?
Smut is the spice that can elevate a novel, but if it’s the main ingredient, then it’s just porn which brings us to our next point…
We won’t accept novels with abuse, porn, incest, underage sex, pedophilia, racism, and stories that focus on real religion and politics.
Does that mean we will reject novels that mention abuse? No. These things are sometimes important to drive the story and trigger events. There is a difference between mentioning abuse, and making it the center of the story with gory descriptions that will make readers drop your novel.
When you apply for a contract, our editors will review your synopsis and the first 5k words that are necessary for the contract. This means that we might contract your novel, but if we find offending content later, we reserve the right to remove that book from the MyFavReads platform and cancel the contract.
TIPS ON PASSING THE CONTRACTING PROCESS
What happens after you apply for a contract?
At least two CEs will review your work with the goal to evaluate if MFR can sell it.
- If it’s YES+YES => YES
- If it’s NO+NO => NO
- If it’s YES+NO => a third CE will review it as a tie-breaker
CEs will look at your cover, title, and synopsis. They need to match your story.
The synopsis needs to be tight, error-free, and have a hook.
Next, our CEs will be looking at your chapters.
If our CEs find the same issue multiple times, they will make notes of 1-2 instances, and expect you to find and edit the rest.
Common issues found:
1: The storyline doesn’t make sense. If a character came back from the dead, you should explain how/why it happened.
2: Typos, capitalization, and punctuation errors – they happen. Use tools like Grammarly or Prowritingaid to find these quickly.
3: Switching tenses and gender pronouns. Once-twice, it’s a typo. If it happens a few times, our CEs will flag it as a worrisome issue.
4: Repetition. Don’t use the same word 2-3 times in the sentence/paragraph. Restructure your sentence or use synonyms. Repetition can happen by circling back to the same event with different wording.
5: Filler words. Don’t use more than necessary words to convey your message.
Small things like proper novel title capitalization and naming your chapters show that you care.
What we expect from you is to look at the feedback and edit all your chapters (existing and future).
Take editing seriously. Every chapter counts. Allowing mediocre (non-edited) content in front of your readers might lead to them dropping your novel or filing a complaint to the MFR.
Don’t stress if you received feedback from our CEs – everyone gets them, especially exclusive books.
Time to worry: if readers complain they are wasting money on subpar content, we sent you feedback, and you didn’t fix the issues.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR NOVEL IS CONTRACTED?
1: You will see the “Go Premium” button in the MFR Creator’s Portal for your newly contracted novel.
That’s where you can select the first locked chapter. Every chapter after that one will be locked.
We recommend that you give your readers 5-15 free chapters. Also, see that your last free chapter ends on a cliffhanger.
2: You will get coins and vouchers to share with your readers. They will show up on the My Fans section in the MFR Creator’s Portal.
We reserve the right to decide which novel gets how much, but in general, exclusively contracted novels get more.
If we find that you are misusing coins/vouchers, they will be removed from your account.
3: We will message you to explain the process of going premium and how to utilize coins and vouchers effectively.
You can use them at your discretion, but the goal is to attract new readers and reward existing ones.
If we determine that you created alt accounts in order to artificially boost the popularity of your book, you will be warned/penalized.
4: You will start seeing data about unlocks in the MFR Creator’s Portal, Statistics Section.
ABOUT MENTIONING OTHER PLATFORMS ON MFR
MFR doesn’t allow promotions of other platforms.
This includes in your chapters, the author’s notes, the synopsis, or your author’s bio… in short: anywhere you can enter text.
It’s NOT OK to say:
“Find my other books on <platform’s name>”
“Buy me a coffee <ko-fi link>”
“Subscribe to receive fanart on <website here>”
It’s OK to say:
“Connect with me on social media. Find links in my author’s profile.”
We are allowing you to enter links to major social media platforms and one URL in your author’s profile.
It’s NOT OK to say:
“My book won X place in <Contest name>”
If the name of the contest identifies with another platform, you can’t mention it.
It’s OK to say:
“My award-winning book <title here>.”
“My book won the 1st prize in a werewolf contest.”
We are contracting your books with good faith that you, as an author, and the MFR, as a platform, can benefit from our symbiotic relationship.
We don’t want to prevent you from mentioning your other books because they are part of your author’s journey. However, advertising other platforms on the MFR is a breach of trust and we will sanction such behavior by withholding your promotions, income, and up to canceling contracts.
NOVEL STATUS
- New: there are no published chapters. The novel doesn’t show up in the app.
- Ongoing: chapters are published. The novel shows in the app on the author’s page, and it’s available in the search if contracted.
- Completed: The novel shows in the app on the author’s page, and it’s available in the search if contracted. You can’t create/publish more chapters.
- Coming soon: there are no published chapters. The novel shows in the app: in the author’s profile.
Coming soon novels will be promoted on our home page in the order they were set as Coming Soon. Due to this, we ask you to not set your novel as Coming Soon unless you have a genuine intention of publishing that novel on the MFR platform.
You should have your cover, title, and plotline in the making (if not complete already).
Note: If we see that the novel is Coming Soon for several months, we will stop promoting it. Repeated offenders might be sanctioned.
VIP FEATURE
What’s VIP?
For readers: It’s a feature that allows them access to advanced chapters for a one-time fee. Readers who unlocked VIP tiers will get the “VIP” label next to their names in the comments/reviews for that novel.
For authors: VIP provides a boost to your income. Readers will pay to unlock VIP tiers (which will count toward the novel’s bonus income) and VIP chapters can be unlocked only via coins; this will reduce the loss of income due to readers using vouchers.
The VIP feature is available for exclusively contracted, ongoing novels that went premium.
Here is info on tiers:
Tier 1 = 5 chapters
Tier 2 = 10 chapters
Tier 3 = coming soon!
Tier 2 = Tier 1 + 5 additional chapters
IMPORTANT! Have your stockpile ready BEFORE you turn on the VIP tier or you will risk having unhappy readers who can’t access latest chapters!
When a novel with VIP is completed, chapters will be coming out of the VIP at a rate of 1 chapter per day so the non-VIP readers can access them.
Note: Unlocking VIP tiers only gives access to locked chapters. Readers will need to unlock chapters separately.
